MOAB III Itinerary
With MOAB III mere days away (and with people en route to Vegas as I type) it is time to reveal the final itinerary for the weekend. Please review the details below and let me know any questions - you know how to reach me.Travel Arrangements

MOAB III - The Wheels Are In Motion
You know that when people start boarding their flights to the United States from all corners of the globe for the singular reason of attending MOAB III that something special is beginning. And so, I am pleased and excited and barely able to contain my anticipation when I announce that it has all started.
Not only did Nick and (Evil) Kate start their journey with a flight from London to Boston at the weekend, but Tracey and Jilly began their adventure boarding the first of 3 flights that will take them all the way from Perth, Western Australia to the Nevada Desert and the Las Vegas Strip!
Shaun and Sam will be arriving direct from London on Thursday and the California contingent will be arriving via land and air during the afternoon on Friday.
But no matter where we are coming from we're there for one reason, and one reason only. Well, actually, two. But you get where I'm going with this...
This is it! This is MOAB III. It's the MOA-MOABs.

Announcing MOAB III
As you will have already seen from the recent email, MOAB III planning is now underway.
The Mother-of-all-MOABs is taking place from Friday December 4th through Sunday December 6th in Las Vegas. We'll be staying at the Hard Rock Hotel this year as they are offering some great room rates right now.
Confirmed attendees thus far are the Birthday Girl, Craig, Tracey, Gillian (Tracey's friend from Western Australia), Nick (celebrating his 30th Birthday), (Evil) Kate, Chuck and Smithy.
We'll be confirming the arrangements in the coming weeks, but the rough itinerary so far is:
Friday - Arrival (PM), Light Dinner, Gambling, Purple Reign (Hooters! @ 11pm), More Gambling
Saturday - Brunch, Go-Kart Racing (Optional), Mesa Grill (Caesar's Palace @ 8:30pm), Evening Activity TBD

Update (not) from the road #7
Saturday July 4th was spent visiting the Royal Palace, looking at some more important works of art in the Prado Museum followed by dinner at Hard Rock Cafe - in celebration of US Independence - with the requisite purchase of souvenirs.
But only then did things start to get really interesting.
July 4th was also the day of the Gay Festival in Madrid and it was only as we were walking back to the apartment after dinner that we realized that the main activities were taking place between us and the apartment. After making our way down to Gran Via and realizing that our way was blocked by thousands upon thousands of people partying in the street, dancing on platforms, and riding open-top double-decker buses, we doubled-back and attempted to find a way around all the festivities.
We were out of luck however and so after encountering a comedian on stage in drag entertaining a smaller crowd and a cross-dresser in full Vegas showgirl regalia chatting with some buddies by a food stand we then found ourselves having to cross Gran Via again. We spied an entrance to the Metro and targeted that so that we didn't have to work against the crowd as much. After that the crowd began to thin out a bit and things started to return to normal but only after the boys experienced some more close-quarters time with local and assorted nationality tourist folks there to enjoy the party.
While not necessarily quite the adventure we had planned we certainly lived up to the UlloaSullivan Adventures tag line that day.

Update from the road #6
It took us a long time to get going yesterday. In fact, it was another couple of hours after my last post that the boys finally woke up - that was around 3:30pm. Neither Michelle or I had eaten so I immediately set about making cereal, followed by toast and fried eggs. Yummy.
It was clear that we weren't going to be doing much in the way of sightseeing so we checked to see whether the local movie theatres were showing any movies in English. Lo and behold, the theatre we spotted last night next to the Haagen Dazs place was so we decided we would go and see the new Megan Fox movie. After that we headed back to the apartment for a game of Scrabble but decided we need some more adventure in our day - or, rather, Matthew and Justin were still hungry and wanted to get some more of the Tortilla they had the night before - so headed back out to the place we ate at the night before.
In spite of it now being 12:45am the place was still jumping and it took us a bit of time to find a table. Happily our patience paid off, however, as not only did we get to order the food we were after, but Uncle Craig got to play Wingman to our two nephews and arrange for this photo to be taken with our lovely waitress. These boys still have a lot to learn. :)
Then it was back to the apartment to finish the game of Scrabble and watch Camino a la Perdition (Translation: Road to Perdition) before getting an early night at 4:30am.

Update from the road #5
I think they must be exhausted.
We went to bed around 2:30am last night after venturing out to take in some of the atmosphere and enjoy some Tapas at an open air restaurant near Teatro Espanole (translation: Spanish Theatre). It's Madrid - everyone eats and stays up late here - and we did have a nice siesta yesterday afternoon to set us up for it. But I have to admit that I didn't expect everyone to still be sleeping 11 hours later! Yep, it's now 1:30 in the afternoon - almost time for our next siesta - and I am the only one awake!
I got up at around 10:15 and headed out to do a spot of grocery shopping so that we had stuff for breakfast and to get a coffee. When I got back a little after 11:00 I did manage to disturb M by knocking some of the dry clothes that are currently hanging over the kitchen doorway - it was an accident; they are hanging very precariously - as I went to put the milk and yoghurt and the surprise treat of a box of Mini Magnum ice creams in the fridge.
The apartment we're staying in is pretty cool - not just because it has air conditioning, unlike Paris - and is in a very central location. We're within walking distance of most things we'll want to see and do - Prado Museum, Retiro Park, Royal Palace, etc. - and above a Flamenco bar. It also has a washing machine that we are putting through it's paces already.
Note: We did offer the boys the bedroom with the two twin beds that can be separated but they said they were more than happy to share the sofa bed in the living room.

Update from the road #4
Yesterday was our last day in Paris and we took our responsibilities seriously by leaving the hotel before noon for the first time. Yes, there we were leaving the hotel bright and early at 11:30am to head over to The Louvre for some more history, culture and typical Uncle Craig/Aunt Michelle fun.
From there we headed outside for a photo opportunity in front of the museum - see if you can spot it on the Flickr site - and grabbed some lunch before making our way up to L'Arc de Triomphe (translation: The Arc de Triomphe). We were disappointed to note on our arrival that we had just missed the deadline for getting tickets up to the top as they were holding some kind of military band event there starting at 4:30pm and so after loitering for a few minutes to watch and video the arrivals of the folks in uniform we headed back to the hotel to get our stuff.
Afte a hair-raising taxi ride (mental note: remind me never to drive in Paris) to the Austerlitz train station and a beer and ice cream snack we then boarded the Elipsos TrennHotel (it's both a Train and a Hotel!) to Madrid. I think that might have been both the most fun - not counting M & M's game of Scrabble - and the best night's sleep we've had on the trip so far. I managed about 7 hours uninterrupted and M, J & M both managed to sleep for longer - even though we were on a moving train that rocked (and occasionally lurched) around as it weaved it's way across France and into Spain. I think it helped that we are all pretty much exhausted from three days of walking around Paris - the taxis just refuse to stop for you! - and we were happy to have a place to lie down for 10+ hours (even though some of us were a little longer than the beds) while the train people did all the work.
We arrived in Madrid at around 11am and headed straight over to check in to the apartment we are staying in until Sunday. We promptly went and got groceries, had some lunch and settled down for a serious Spanish-style siesta. It's now 9:14pm as I finish up this post and we are just about getting ready to venture out for dinner/tapas. It looks to me like we've got the Madrid lifestyle down already...

Update from the road #3
(a.k.a no wide angle lens on your Blackberry then, Craig?)
Monday saw the team getting up late (as expected) but eager to get going with some sight-seeing. So, around noon we saddled up and headed out to get some breakfast before making our way over to Notre Dame for our first historical/cultural attraction.
From there we wandered along the Seine for a while and then get on the metro again over to Le Tour de Eiffel (Translated: The Eiffel Tower) where we were unlucky enough to keep getting stuck behind two rather unpleasant-smelling individuals in the lines for the 3rd floor (Translated: Le Troisieme Etage) and then back down to the ground (Translated... oh, forget it).
Getting back to the hotel was fun that night as we found ourselves in the height of rush hour on the Metro - which isn't air-conditioned, by the way - and ended up having to split up into two groups due to lack of room.
The Jason Mraz gig was really good, although also in the realms of being very hot. The venue was part of a larger music/performance complex but appeared to constructed somewhat like a (permanent) tent, with canvas stretched over exposed metal gurders. What looked like air-conditioning ducts clearly were just for show as there was very little going on in the way of conditioning of the air in there.
Dinner was a kebab and chips (Translated: Pommes Frites (in French), French Fries (in American) after the show that everyone enjoyed but which may or may not have been responsible for my not being able to get to sleep until around 5am just as the sun was coming up.

Update from the road #2
(a.k.a. technical difficulties won't stop us!)
I realized en route yesterday that I've forgotten the cable to connect my camera to the laptop and because it's a Sony it uses a Memory Stick rather than an SD card and of course my laptop doesn't have the requisite slot for that particular storage medium. Fortunately, M and Matthew both have Canon cameras and we will be able to get photos off their cameras - but that doesn't help when all three of my travelling companions are asleep and I am busy taking photos of Justin maintaining the same position throughout our Eurostar journey as the English countryside, the tunnel and the French countryside pass us by on the way to Paris. Oh well, you'll just have to wait for that - we'll be looking for an adaptor somewhere on our travels.

Anyway, we arrived safe and sound and without incident - other than the stewardess dropping the meal and smashing my glass (which didn't wake Justin up, btw) on the train - at Gare du Nord and checked into our hotel. After a few minutes of respite we all agreed to go for a walk in the Paris evening and being that the Sacre Coeur was just round the corner that seemed like the perfect target for us.
Also, the boys didn't quite believe us that it would still be light outside until at least 10:30pm.
And so it was that we headed out for our first stroll in Paris at around 9pm and found our way to the Sacred Heart (see how I performed from French to English translation on the fly for you there?) Basilica for a quick photo shoot before finding a little restaurant for a late supper and the traditional French glace (Haagen-Dazs) before heading back to the hotel for a well-earned sleep. In spite of the warmth - air-conditioning is not common in northern Europe - and the noise through the open windows we all managed to get to sleep. In fact, the other 3 are all still asleep as I write this entry - I had to get up for some press calls for work (we announced one of my team's initiatives this morning) otherwise I would be too. However, I will be heading up stairs in a few minutes to rouse them so we can start to do some sight-seeing. I'm sure they'll be excited to hear my plan for us to rent bicycles from Velib so that we can cover as much ground as possible while still taking in the atmosphere of this beautiful city. And tonight is the Jason Mraz gig...

Madrid Apartment Booked
Just a quick update to let you know where we're staying while in Madrid from July 2nd to 5th.
We're staying at the Urban Santa Ana Apartments, Echegaray, 13 2ºA, Madrid - a nicely located apartment with it's own kitchen and washing machine which should serve as our own little oasis to both enjoy the wonderful city atmosphere and sites, and to catch up on underwear washing after 4 days on the road. I've also been in touch with Sol, the apartment manager, via email and he's agreed to let us in first thing when we arrive on the Elipsos train from Paris so we can drop off our stuff and get cleaned up before heading out to enjoy the wonders of Madrid. It doesn't get much better than that.
One of my team members was in Madrid recently and went and checked it out for us and confirmed that it's in a nice, relatively quiet area, that is close to all the major sites we will be visiting on our stay. There is also a nice bar in the same building should M and I feel the need to escape from teenager-dom for a few minutes. :)

Fifteen Again
When in London, Matthew and Justin always like to visit the Trattoria at Fifteen to enjoy their favorite bottled water, fresh Olives and various other Italian-influenced delights.
And so it is that I can confirm we have reservations for Tuesday July 7th at 8pm, which should give us plenty of time to get off the Eurostar, check in to our hotel and take a quick nap (it's what we'll having been doing all week in Spain!) before putting on our best duds and heading over to 15 Westland Place.

Train Reservations
This morning I made the reservations for the trains - Eurostar from London to Paris (under the English Channel) and the Elipsos Train Hotel (pictured here) - that will take us from Paris to Madrid and then from Barcelona back to Paris on an overnight journey in each direction.
I'm actually quite excited about the train rides themselves, nevermind what we'll be doing, seeing and eating while in each of the cities we're visiting.

Jumping Ahead
Just a quick update that flights and hotel are now booked for the August Vegas trip with Neil, Tracey, Letty and Jim.
We're staying at Caesar's Palace and have Mesa Grill reservations for Monday 10th @ 8pm.

Le Billet de Jason Mraz
Just as when moving into a new house/apartment, when planning a vacation you should always take care of the musical entertainment before anything else.
And so, I am pleased to announce that participants in the UlloaSullivan Europe 2009 Adventure will be attending the Jason Mraz concert at Le Zenith, Paris on June 29th.

European Adventure 2009
As you will have seen on the UlloaSullivan.com site we are now able to confim the upcoming UlloaSulliuvan Adventure - Europe 2009 - with Matthew and Justin joining Michelle and I for a trip to France (Paris and Versailles) and Spain (Barcelona, Madrid, Etc.). We'll be leaving California on June 27th and returning on July 9th just in time for Matthew's 18th birthday on the 11th.
The flights are booked and the facial-hair objectives have been set. Michelle is excused from the latter. More information on the itinerary as things get confirmed.
